Hemorrhoid Removal:
Nonsurgical Treatments For Hemorrhoids:

When typical home remedies fail, your next best option may be a minimally invasive procedure that results in hemorrhoid removal. This section summarizes the most often performed procedures.

Hemorrhoid Removal - Nonsurgical

Most of the time, you can treat your hemorrhoids on your own. But sometimes medical procedures are necessary. To treat the persistent blood clots in thrombosed external hemorrhoids, bleeding hemorrhoids, or other painful conditions, your doctor may perform a "minimally invasive" medical procedure that results in hemorrhoid removal nonsurgically. These treatments can be done in your doctor's office or on an outpatient basis:

Incision. Your doctor may remove a blood clot in your piles (a condition known as "thrombosis") by making a simple incision in the hemorrhoids. This will relieve pressure in the external hemorrhoids and reduce your pain. More often, doctors will recommend hemorrhoid removal, or a full hemorrhoidectomy surgery, to treat thrombosed external hemorrhoids.

Rubber band ligation. Your doctor will use this procedure, often called "hemorrhoid banding," to cut off the blood supply to internal hemorrhoids. The doctor places a rubber band around the base of an internal hemorrhoid. This cuts off the blood circulation needed to feed it. Within a few days, the hemorrhoid will shrink and be eliminated during a bowel movement.

Sclerotherapy. Your doctor injects a hardening solution directly into the hemorrhoids to shrink them. The solution causes the walls in the blood vessels feeding the hemorrhoids to collapse. With their blood supply cut off, the hemorrhoids shrink.

The procedure is considered less painful than rubber band ligation but not as effective.

Infrared Coagulation. Generally done as an outpatient procedure, this involves burning and cauterizing hemorrhoidal tissue. A laser or infrared light is used to burn small, bleeding internal hemorrhoids. This causes them to shrink. The procedure is not as effective as rubber band ligation in preventing recurrences of more serious hemorrhoids Grade III or Grade IV).

In the United States, these are the most often performed minimally invasive medical procedures to treat more serious forms of hemorrhoids. Generally, they're used to treat internal hemorrhoids.
