Nonsurgical Treatments:
Sitz Bath for Hemorrhoids Home Treatments

Sof Sitz Inflatable Sitz Bath

You can treat most hemorrhoids at home. With treatment, symptoms disappear, generally, within a few days. Hemorrhoids home treatments will give you relief from your hemorrhoids, but this is not the same as a cure. Only lifestyle changes involving diet, de-stressing, exercise, and other preventive measures will stop hemorrhoids from recurring.

Typical hemorrhoid home treatments that will relieve the symptoms you're experiencing right now include:

Sitz baths and good hygiene
Hemorrhoidal ointments, creams, suppositories, and compresses
Hemorrhoids medications

Other nonsurgical treatments, minimally invasive procedures, lead to eventual hemorrhoid removal.

Take A Sitz Bath To Aid Good Hygiene

Taking a sitz bath involves sitting in a few inches of warm water (hotter is not better) to relieve the pressure on your hemorrhoids. Run enough water to cover your bottom as you sit in the bathtub. Bring your knees to your chest. This will relax the pressure on your hemorrhoids by relaxing the anal sphincter muscle. Robert Giller, M.D., writes in Natural Prescriptions  that this "draws blood to the area and helps shrink the swollen veins" (p. 176).

Sitz baths also aid good hygiene by keeping your hemorrhoids and surrounding anal region clean.

Epsom salts or baking soda make a soothing addition to your sitz bath water. Also, some aromatherapists recommend adding lavender and juniper oils to your sitz soak. But don't soap your anal area. Soap may actually aggravate your symptoms.

Sit for about 15 minutes to give the veins time to relax. Do this 2 to 3 times a day during a flare-up. The video below demonstrates how to prepare a sitz bath.

After bathing, gently dry the area well. You can use a hair dryer on a very low setting. You don't want to leave moisture in this area because it can cause irritation. After drying off completely, apply petroleum jelly to the area to dull the itching and the pain. You can also apply witch hazel. It's an astringent and will shrink the tissue.

Then, go enjoy a cup of strong chamomile tea to further aid the healing of your hemorrhoids.
